Resources:
Below are some of the resources that may be available
to you:
Medicaid:
All states have a medical waiver, or Katie
Beckett Waiver. The rules differ in each
state. If your child has ongoing or
excessive medical bills, it is worthwhile to apply for Medicaid in your state
as you may be eligible to receive coverage (primary if you have no insurance or
secondary if you already have insurance) to help cover the costly medical bills
associated with EE & EGID.
Some states may require that you be denied
by Social Security. Others may have
income requirements. In NJ, there is
Medicaid for the Medically Needy (those who are not eligible for Social
Security), and while your income & liquid assets are considered when
applying for your child, a 2nd child and medical bills are used to
offset the income, thereby allowing for the greater possibility of coverage if
you do not have much in the way of liquid assets (i.e. 2nd home,
bank accounts, stocks, etc).
In NJ, if your child also has a pervasive
developmental disability (i.e. on the autism spectrum, etc), he/she may be
eligible for more assistance through the NJ Division of
Developmental Disabilities (DDD).

Medically Needy at:

In PA, there is reportedly more access to
Medicaid for adults and children.
While PA Medicaid eligibility is not as
familiar to us at this time, some info is available at:

You may need to follow additional links, or
call them about it.

If you are incurring a lot of medical bills,
but aren’t sure that you’ll be eligible, it doesn’t hurt to apply to be
sure. Make sure you let them know
that you are applying for “Medicaid for the Medically Needy”. If they don’t know what you are talking about,
talk to someone else as it seems that not everyone in the DHS is familiar with
this waiver.

Catastrophic
Illness in Children Relief Fund:
In NJ, there is a “Catastrophic Illness in
Children Relief Fund”. If you live in NJ
and want to find out if you’re eligible, contact the Dept of Human
Services. More info can be found at http://www.state.nj.us/humanservices/catill/cicrf1.html
NJ Special Child Health
Services:
Once a child is registered with them, a case
manager is assigned to help you access any necessary resources that are
available to your child. Please use the
links below to look into this. It has
been a valuable resource to many.
